The Mushroom Hunter
Don King, known affectionately as The Mushroom Hunter, has spent the past two decades immersed in the world of wild mushrooms and local edible plants. With a deep passion for sustainable, land-based foods, Don has foraged across Ohio and the broader Great Lakes region, as well as in Mexico, Colombia, and Canada. For over 15 years, he has been sharing his expertise through guided walks, private workshops, and educational appearances—helping thousands of people deepen their relationship with the forest. Don is a regular media contributor, featured on NPR’s Good Eats and over a dozen times on Fox 8’s New Day Cleveland. He teaches through Cleveland Metroparks, Holden Arboretum, The Wilderness Center, and The Ohio Mushroom Festival, among others. In 2023, Don joined Epiphany Mushroom Co. as Director of Mycology, where he leads cultivation initiatives for culinary and medicinal fungi. As a founding partner of MycoTreks, Don brings grounded field experience and a strong ethic of responsible foraging, inviting guests to explore nature with curiosity, care, and respect.

MYCOGEEKY
MycoGeeky is a co-founder of MycoTreks, a registered nurse, and married father of three who brings grounded insight and real-world care to everything he does—from podcasting to field forays. As host of The MycoGeeky Podcast and creator of over 1,000 custom sterilizers for at-home cultivators, he’s become a trusted figure in the mushroom community. His passion for fungi is rooted in ecology, cultural understanding, and citizen science—where cultivation is just one branch of a broader love for the fungal world. He’s a member of the North American Mycological Association (where he spoke at the 2024 Annual Foray), led a public foray with the Ohio Mushroom Festival, volunteers as a sequence validator with the Fungal Diversity Survey, and joined the inaugural 2025 cohort of the Amateur Mycology Publishing Group led by OMDL. At MycoTreks, he draws from this wide-ranging experience to lead immersive, ethical, and educational mushroom adventures designed to inspire lasting transformation.

Natural State Mycology
Natural State Mycology is the online moniker of a passionate forager, cultivator, and co-founder of MycoTreks. Based in Arkansas, his deep love for fungi took shape in the Ozark Mountains, where years of foraging nurtured a lasting connection to the land and its hidden biodiversity. Since 2009, he has immersed himself in the world of mushrooms—starting with gourmet and medicinal species and eventually expanding into the cultivation and breeding of fungi known for their unique properties and ecological roles. In addition to his field expertise, he is a small business owner with a strong background in customer care—skills that help ensure every MycoTreks trip runs smoothly and leaves guests feeling welcomed, supported, and inspired. Outside of mushrooms, he’s an avid mountain biker, explorer, and food enthusiast who embraces a holistic connection to the natural world. Through MycoTreks, he helps lead immersive, ethical adventures that deepen each guest’s relationship with fungi, food, and the forest itself.
