Flight Info & Options

This year’s Xalapa trip is officially from July 13th through July 20th, 2025, but we recommend that travelers book their flight leaving out of Veracruz for Monday, July 21, 2024 as it gives you a chance to enjoy Sunday in Xalapa, and a nice evening drive back into Veracruz. This allows you to wake up in Veracruz on Monday morning and makes getting to the airport in the morning much easier and less stressful. Hotels/AirBNBs in Veracruz are very affordable, and adding this day on doesn’t dramatically add to the cost of the trip. For those who absolutely need to be back at work by Monday, there will be at least one rental car making its way back early for those who need to depart on Sunday. The other option is the local buses which are very nice and affordable (under $20 to get back to Veracruz).

A handful of travelers so far have decided to arrive early on the 12th or 13th, and one couple will be staying several additional days in Xalapa so they can explore more of the region. Just let us know your thoughts and plans, and we will work with you and the hotel to ensure you get to stay in the same room for the entirety of your trip.

Arrival and Departure Airport: Veracruz International Airport (VER) - Aeropuerto Internacional Heriberto Jara is located in Veracruz, Mexico

United Airlines seems to have the most flights and a majority of travelers are booking through them. If you wish to do the same and travel with others on this trip, look for flight UA1861 from Houston to Veracruz and flight UA1860 from Veracruz to Houston.

Once you have booked your flights, please forward us the flight info to mycotrekstours@gmail.com so we may update our database. This info will be used to assist us in coordinating travel to and from the airport as well as for booking hotels in Veracruz.

Essential Resources for Traveler Safety and Health

Beat the Bugs

Permethrin, picaridin 20%, and DEET are three effective insect repellents commonly used to prevent bites from ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes.

Permethrin is a synthetic chemical that can be applied to clothing, gear, and even tents. It repels and kills ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, and other insects on contact. Once applied to fabric, permethrin can remain effective through several washings, providing long-lasting protection for outdoor activities.

Picaridin is a synthetic repellent that is applied directly to the skin. It is effective against a wide range of biting insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers. Picaridin is odorless, non-greasy, and generally considered safe for use on children and adults.

DEET is one of the most widely used insect repellents. It works by interfering with insects' ability to detect humans as a food source.

DEET-free options like Murphy's Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent Spray work well if you are looking for a more natural approach.

By using permethrin-treated clothing and gear along with picaridin or DEET-based repellents on exposed skin, outdoor enthusiasts can effectively protect themselves against tick, chigger, and mosquito bites, reducing the risk of insect-borne diseases and discomfort during outdoor activities.
